Firefighters are working to clear a block of flats in Wellington's Aro Valley of smoke - after a fire broke out in one of the apartments

Multiple crews and fire trucks were called to the council-run Pukehinau Flats just after 2.30pm.

Incident controller Matt Franklin, says the fire was contained to the one unit - and fire investigators will be attending the scene.

He says they've carried out a primary search of the building and everyone is accounted for - but now they'll be going floor by floor to be sure.
