    Harrowing accounts from Loafers Lodge residents escaping the fire which engulfed the Wellington hostel in 2023


    A man's on trial after pleading not guilty to five counts of murder and two counts of arson.

    Herald reporter Melissa Nightingale says a statement from one resident was read, detailing them waking to the sounds of fire alarms and looking for a way out.

    His statement says one of the exits was so filled with smoke he felt like he was suffocating, before he escaped out a window and onto the roof.
