Calls for more investment into research for preventing falls in aged residential care

Calls for more investment into research for preventing falls in aged residential care

In New Zealand, falls are one of the top three causes of injury-related death for over-65s, with about 60 percent of those in care homes suffering a fall every year.

It comes as the number of New Zealanders aged over 65 is projected to increase to one in four by the 2050s.

Auckland University professor Ngaire Kerse says we know what to do, but aren't implementing these policies.

She says they include things like putting people on Vitamin D and having a set amount of protein and calcium-based foods to prevent muscle loss.
