Sarah Michelle Gellar is determined to bring the upcoming sequel to 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' to the screen the "right" way

The 47-year-old actor, best known for playing Buffy Summers in the original series, is taking on both lead acting and ex ecutive producing roles in the new Hulu project

She has now told People about the pressures of the project: "I wish there was a better word than overwhelming. It's heartwarming and exciting and also incredibly nerve-wracking at the same time.

Sarah added the experience is "nerve-wracking" as she feels "you have to do it right".

But she expressed confidence in the team behind the series, adding: "I think we have this team in place that is legendary, from Chloé Zhao to the Zucks (Nora and Lilla Zuckerman), to Gail Berman. And I think people are going to be pretty impressed."

Chloé, 42, is set to direct and ex ecutive produce the pilot of the show, with the Zuckermans writing, showrunning and ex ecutive producing the series, according to reports from Deadline and Variety.

Sarah will reprise her role as Buffy Summers in a recurring capacity while also serving as an ex ecutive producer, alongside Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui, all of whom were part of the original production team.

Dolly Parton, whose company Sandollar Entertainment was an uncredited producer on the original show, will also return as an ex ecutive producer.

The project, which is nearing a pilot order, will not centre on Buffy but on a new slayer, Hulu confirmed earlier this month.

Sarah announced her involvement in an Instagram post, revealing discussions about the project began three years ago with a phone call from Gail Berman.

She said: "She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential 'Buffy' revival.

"I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I've always done, I told Gail that I just didn't see a way for the show to exist again.

"We'd always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice. I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty-minute coffee quickly turned into a four-hour adventure."
