A police watchdog says a custody officer's use of force against a prisoner was unjustified

A police watchdog says a custody officer's use of force against a prisoner was unjustified

A custody officer in the Manukau District Custody Unit struck a 19-year-old in November 2023 - and punched him in the face while trying to restrain him.

The prisoner didn't stop banging his head against a concrete wall when warned.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority says the officer was unjustified in the first strike.

It found the second use of force was justified to top the prisoner spitting - but says punching him in the face was excessive.
