The five-week trial of the man accused of lighting the fatal Loafers Lodge fire in Wellington is reaching its final arguments

The five-week trial of the man accused of lighting the fatal Loafers Lodge fire in Wellington is reaching its final arguments

The 50-year-old's facing five murder charges and two arson charges over the 2023 blaze.

He's pursing a defence of insanity.

Herald reporter Melissa Nightingale says the crown prosecutor's closing argument discussed the defendant's past history.

She says they said he's familiar with fire and in the past attempted to burn down a butchers shop out of anger.

The defence is yet to give its closing argument.
