Christy Carlson Romano has received a worrying result in a cancer screening after James Van Der Beek inspired her to get tested

The Even Stevens star, 41, has revealed she went for a check-up along with her husband Brendan Rooney following the loss of the Dawson's Creek star, who died on February 11 aged 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer, and she's now facing an anxious wait for a scan after a concerning test result.

In a video posted on Instagram, Christy explained: "I took this cancer screening. Both my parents had cancer. My mom beat it. My dad eventually didn't ... I got the results back ...

"My husband's came back completely negative. Mine did not come back negative. So basically what that means is that I may have stagable cancer.

"The next steps are to get a PET scan. I'm fighting with companies to get that covered."

Christy went on to explain Der Beek's death pushed her to get tested. She wiped away tears as she said: "I live in Austin, and I was able to meet James Van Der Beek a bunch.

"His family's amazing. He's a pillar of our community in Texas. They always were raising money for the most amazing charities, and he's not with us anymore. Cancer is everywhere. Which is why I got this test."

She went on to add: "I kind of was in disbelief about it, because I was filming, and I was so happy to be back on set, and I didn't want to really think about it much until I got home and then I thought we'll just do a PET scan ...

"Very vulnerable time for me. About 367 since I got shot in the face. Time to have a strong sense of faith and leave it in God's hands ... I'm sure some people thing I'm overreacting but cancer is serious and I have two little girls .. This is a very emotional post."

The news comes just a year after Christy was "shot in the face" while taking her husband out clay pigeon shooting for his birthday.

The actress - who has daughters Isabella and Sofia with Brendan - revealed she was injured due to the "unsafe firing" of another party and had to be rushed to hospital.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote: "Yesterday was my husband's birthday and I took him to shoot clay pigeons as a present. There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face. @thebrendanrooney immediately sprung into action, assessed me, and rushed me to the hospital.

"I was hit in 5 places, one was less than an inch from hitting me directly in my right eye."

She explained it was "too risky" to undergo surgery at the time but she felt "grateful to be alive" following the ordeal.

She added: "Unfortunately a fragment got lodged behind my eye and it is too risky to remove surgically at this time. Doctors will continue to monitor me (I can see normally at the moment).

"With everything that happened, all I can think about is how grateful I am to be alive. I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much. I saw my life flash before my eyes and I'm telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant."
