    The potential closure of a Southland aluminium smelter has sucked 1.5 billion dollars from the value of Kiwi power companies


    Tiwai owner Rio Tinto - the country's largest electricity consumer - is considering closing its Bluff plant.

    Since the announcement - power company Meridian's share value has dropped by nearly 8 percent.

    Mercury, Contact and Genesis have also seen shares drop.
