The man killed in a light plane crash in Canterbury was a well respected glider pilot

Emergency services received reports of a light plane crashing at Twizel-Omarama Road near Lake Ohau at 10.50 this morning.

Omarama Airfield chairman Clive Geddes confirmed the pilot flew out of the Airfield on a solo flight.

He says the pilot is well known across the whole community.

Geddes says the man had been a glider pilot and instructor out of Omarama for over 20 years.
