Researcher says support for people with Coeliac disease appears to be missing the mark

Researcher says support for people with Coeliac disease appears to be missing the mark

New research in today's New Zealand Medical Journal has found only two percent of Coeliac New Zealand members use prescriptions to get gluten-free flour and baking mixes.

Nearly 40 percent didn't actually know the prescriptions were even available.

Lead author Sophie Hall from Otago University Christchurch says Coeliacs need to maintain a strict gluten-free diet, but their foods are often more expensive.

She says even a trace of gluten can cause symptoms so it's important Coeliacs have equitable access to everyday items.
