Gale force northwest winds and thunderstorms are set to hit Northland and Auckland between midnight and the early hours of Friday morning.

This month's had just three days with less than one millimetre of rain reported at Auckland Airport.

MetService meteorologist Angus Hines says most Kiwis can start looking forward to a more settled Saturday.
