A Tauranga iwi is asking the Waitangi Tribunal for an urgent hearing about alleged breaches of the Treaty by the new Government

A Tauranga iwi is asking the Waitangi Tribunal for an urgent hearing about alleged breaches of the Treaty by the new Government

Ngai Te Rangi Settlements Trust says coalition policies attack and undermine the mana of the iwi and Te Ao Maori.

That includes ensuring public service departments are primarily named and communicate in English, and Act's bid to revise Treaty principles.

Chair Charlie Tawhiao says he's hoping the Tribunal will advise against this - although he's not confident the Government will listen.

He says that doesn't mean they should throw their hands up in the air and do nothing - and many iwi have been in touch to support the action.
