    Damaging gales and heavy rain are expected to lash the lower North Island and most of the South Island tomorrow


    MetService has issued red wind warnings for Wellington, Canterbury and parts of Wairarapa and Marlborough.

    A local state of emergency has been declared in Canterbury - where gusts could reach between 130 and 150 kilometres an hour.

    Fire and Emergency New Zealand has issued a total ban on open fires and fireworks across the region.

    Meanwhile, the Wellington public transport network's facing major disruptions and cancellations throughout the day tomorrow.

    People are also being asked to prepare for potential power outages.
