Eva Longoria blurted out that she and her husband had previously been divorced when Pope Francis was preparing to bless ahead of their marriage

The 'Only Murders in the Building' actress and her husband José Bastón were fortunate enough to meet the late Pope Francis in 2016, just weeks before their wedding, but Eva made a faux pas when the pontiff - who passed away on Easter Monday (21.04.25) aged 88, following a stroke and heart failure - was about to bless the couple

Speaking on 'Live With Kelly and Mark', she said: "I was so fortunate to meet him.

"He actually blessed Pepe and I right before we got married.

"We went to Rome and my husband was like, 'Do you want to meet the Pope?' And I was like, 'Yes!'

"It was like two months before we got married, so we're standing there and he moves along.

"He speaks Spanish, and my husband speaks Spanish, and I kept saying, 'How do you say your holiness in Spanish?'

"And my husband would say it. It was a very hard word.

"I was practicing it and practicing it and he's getting closer, and I was practicing it and then he gets in front of me and I go, 'Hello, your Holiness.'

"It didn't come out [in Spanish].

"So my husband asked him, 'Will you please bless us? We're about to get married.' And he goes, 'Of course, of course.'

"So he grabs our hands, and he starts the blessing and I go, 'We're divorced! Just so you know. I know that's a bad thing. I felt like you should know this. We're both divorced. But he has children, so we can't get it annulled. It's a long thing.'

"And my husband is like, 'Shut up.'

"He [Pope Francis] said, 'Do you love each other?' And I said, 'Yes, we do,' and then he gave us a blessing."

Eva also met Pope Francis a second time, when she made her sister Lisa's dreams come true.

She added: "I did meet him a second time at The White House, when he was with [former US President Barack] Obama, and it was right in between the same time.

"I have an older sister with special needs, and so I'd asked her, 'Who do you most want to meet in the world, Lisa?'

"I thought she was going to say Brad Pitt or George Clooney, and she goes, 'The Pope.'

"And I go, 'Oh, that's a little hard.'

"So I took her to The White House and it's a big procession. All these cardinals who are coming out are archbishops or whatever, and she goes, 'Is that him? There he is.' And I was like, 'I could've just got a bishop and pretended it was the Pope. She wouldn't have known.'

"But that was her wish, to meet him."

The former 'Desperate Housewives' star also thanked the late Pope Francis for being an "ally to many of us".

She wrote on Instagram: "Rest in Peace, Your Holiness Pope Francis. Thank you for being an ally to many of us and speaking up for the marginalized. Your compassion, kindness and humility will always be remembered (sic)"
