Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs have joined the cast of the new Tomb Raider TV series

The pair will also be accompanied in the ensemble for the Amazon Prime Video show by Celia Imrie and Bill Paterson.

The show stars Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner in the lead role of Lara Croft, with Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge serving as the programme's creator, writer, ex ecutive producer and co-showrunner.

Isaacs will play the role of Lara's uncle Atlas DeMornay with Paterson portraying Winston, the Croft family's longstanding butler.

Celia has been cast as Francine, the head of advancement at the British Museum, with Sigourney as Evelyn Wallis - a mysterious and high-flying woman who is looking to take advantage of Lara's talents.

Sophie - who will follow in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander by portraying Lara Croft - said in a statement: "I've been a long-time fan of Tomb Raider and the character of Lara. She has always felt for me, very emboldened in a male-dominated world."

The 29-year-old star added: "She's a fierce female role model!"

Waller-Bridge said: "Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters. I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams!"

Peter Friedlander, the head of Amazon MGM Studios, added: "Tomb Raider has always been defined by bold storytelling and unforgettable characters, and these new cast members bring incredible depth and gravitas to the series.

"With talents like Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs joining the ensemble, we're elevating this world in exciting new ways, and can't wait for our global Prime Video audience to experience this next chapter of Tomb Raider."

Phoebe is a big fan of the Tomb Raider video game series and previously spoke of her excitement at getting to work on the series.

The 40-year-old star said: "It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artefacts out - Croft is coming."
