Northern surf life savers had a busy weekend

Eight people were rescued and 11 assisted at the region's 18 beaches over the weekend.

The busiest beach was Muriwai - with 700 people at its peak - and four rescues.

And Orewa beach lifeguards were called to help an unconscious person Opahi Bay, who wasn't breathing.

They were stood down on arrival, because ambulance, fire and emergency and police were already on the scene.

Life savers dealt with three major first aid events, and 14 minor, over the weekend.
