Rescue helicopters are on-standby for the container ship stranded at the top of the South Island

Rescue helicopters are on-standby for the container ship stranded at the top of the South Island

A mayday call from the 66-thousand tonne Shiling -- which has 24 crew members onboard -- came just after 11.

The vessel currently lies 22 nautical miles northwest off the Farewell Spit and has stopped moving.

A tug boat is two hours away, with Defence Force Hercules also responding.

Maritime NZ confirms conditions have improved since the call, and the vessel Master is comfortable staying onboard.

And St John confirms its Nelson Major Incident Support Team is also on-standby.
