Kerry Katona was convinced she was "going to give birth" when she was rushed to hospital last month

The former Atomic Kitten star was struck down with severe pain and taken to hospital by ambulance before being diagnosed with painful bowel condition colitis - and Kerry has now admitted she mistook the symptoms for labour pains.

In her column for new! magazine, the mother-of-five explained: "I went into hospital in an ambulance because I was getting severe pains - I thought I was going to give birth! While I was there I had a CT scan and I was diagnosed with colitis.

"I was sent home with morphine and told only to eat bland food - which I'm gutted about because I love spicy food! As lovely as the doctors and nurses were, I'm going to have to go private and find out what the hell's going on. It's nothing against the NHS though."

Kerry went on to reveal the condition may explain why she's been feeling so tired recently.

She added: "After leaving the hospital last week, I've been told I'm supposed to be on bed rest, which is quite handy because I am tired a lot of the time.

"My condition is to do with fatigue as well and it does make you feel tired ... I've looked into colitis and the fatigue I'm experiencing has a lot to do with it."

After her medical emergency, Kerry was forced to miss her daughter Lilly's 22nd birthday party and the former singer admits she felt like she'd let her down.

She wrote: "I just got out of hospital that day, so I wasn't in any fit state, but I feel like I've let her down, although it wasn't my fault and I'm not well ... I put on a little spread for her on her actual birthday to make up for it."

The health scare came just weeks after Kerry fell ill during the filming of a new Sky documentary and had to pull out of the shoot at the last minute after she "nearly fainted".

At the time, Kerry was convinced she had contracted "norovirus" - a vomiting stomach bug - and she felt devastated to have let "everyone down" by delaying her work on the unspecified project.

She also explained she'd been forced to leave an awards show early because she felt so ill and she made a swift exit after presenting one of the prizes. Writing in a previous column for new! magazine in December, Kerry explained: "I've been really poorly this week, so I didn't stay at The Beauty Awards for long - I presented an award and left.

"I should be filming a new documentary for Sky as I write this, but I nearly fainted getting my hair and make-up done. I rang the producers and said, as a professional, that I think it'd be wrong to put me in front of the camera like this.

"With it being such a powerful documentary, I want to give it my all. I cried because I never pull out of anything, and I felt like I'd let everyone down.

"But I'm really not well - I'm burning up!"
