Olivia Colman feels a special connection to 'The Father'

The 47-year-old actress stars in the drama movie alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins and admits she feels particularly invested in the film - which tells the story of a man who struggles with ageing - and its plot

Olivia explained: "My mum was a district nurse for the NHS for 40 years, and her passion was always geriatric care.

"And I would go in the car with her when it was school holidays or when I was ill. And I'd see lonely people in their homes who didn't have families. My mum is an ambassador for dementia care, so it's always been a big part of my family's life."

The award-winning actress thinks it's particularly important to show the difficulty families face when one of their loved ones is affected by dementia.

She told the BBC: "It's an awful decision to make. To look into your father's eyes and see fear or confusion. It's a terrible thing to still want to live your own life, but you have to have your own life. And that was a reason I wanted to play it, I wanted to play all those feelings."

Olivia's veteran co-star was also determined to make the movie after being wowed by the script.

Anthony said: "It was so powerful, and so simple, so direct, so concise, so compact.

"I've been fortunate, in the last few years I've been involved with some wonderful films, but this was really unique."

Meanwhile, Olivia previously admitted to being slightly relieved that she'll no longer play Queen Elizabeth in 'The Crown'.

The acclaimed actress starred as the monarch on the Netflix show in 2019 and 2020, but she revealed it was a tough task.

She explained: "I had a little bit of play with that. But definitely … the hardest part I’ve done is someone who’s real. I’m not ashamed to say that I’m quite pleased now to be able to move on to something else."
