12 people from a group called Te Waka Hourua were arrested earlier this week for painting over a panel showing the English version of the Treaty, which is not a direct translation of the Te Reo version.

Wellington Central MP Tamatha Paul has used social media to say the defacing is more than art and deeper than protest, and she wholeheartedly supports the actions of the group.

Ms Paul also called out "modern day colonisers" for trying to undermine the Treaty and says this is only the beginning.

National and Labour have both defended Te Papa's right to display an English version.
