Next year's Six Nations rugby tournament will start on a Thursday for the first time in 78 years

Next year's Six Nations rugby tournament will start on a Thursday for the first time in 78 years

Defending champions France will host Ireland to kick-off the tournament on February 5 local time.

That is to avoid a clash with the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan the following day.

The last time the tournament kicked off on a Thursday was 1948, when Ireland also played away to France on New Year's Day.
