Strong winds and heavy rain is forecast for much of the South Island from tonight

MetService has issued an Orange strong wind warning for Canterbury high country from 10pm - with severe northwesterlies expected to gust up to 120 kilometres an hour in exposed places.

The Transport Agency's urging extra care on State Highway 7 from Waipara to Springs Junction, including Lewis Pass.

Significant downpours are expected around Mount Cook to Arthur's Pass and for much of the West Coast.
