Guy Fieri has described his horror injury as the "worst thing he's been through" in two decades

The 57-year-old celebrity chef has been in a wheelchair for the last couple of months after suffering a scary fall down a flight of stairs which left him with a torn quad muscle, and he has been sure to take medical advice on his recovery.

He told PEOPLE magazine: "My doctors are all like, 'We know you want to get after it, but let's not go back to where we were.'

"And I'm like, 'We are never going back to that!' That was the worst thing I've been through in the last 20 years.

"But now I'll be up and ready and healthy and rolling by the time we hit the Super Bowl for sure."

Next month, the Food Network star is set to house his Flavortown Tailgate party for the Super Bowl.

He was filming his latest series Flavor Town Food Fight when "one foot went forward and the other foot got caught on the threshold", which sent him down the stairs and caused the brutal injury.

Guy underwent surgery just before Thanksgiving, but he's "doing better" in the weeks after the accident.

He added: "I'm doing better. It was definitely a trying holiday, but you know what, you get some real appreciation for having the ability to just get up and walk around and do everything you used to.

"I'm a big CrossFit and hiking guy, so eight weeks of no hiking has driven me kind of crazy.

"But I'm looking forward to it, trying to take it easy."

Guy was told to stay off his feet for eight weeks, and he will then wear a cast while undergoing rehab.

In late November, he told Fox News Digital: "Eight weeks of no weight on it, crutches and a cast and then the rehab, which to me - I want to get after it as fast as possible.

"He's like, 'You know as much as you want to, get back to being Guy, you're going to really have to go through [it].'

"I haven't busted anything. I mean I broke it all as a kid. I broke my leg, broke my knee, broke my wrist, broke my sternum, my ribs, my tailbone.

"I mean, you know, name it, I broke it. But I got done doing that s***. You know, I got done with that type of behaviour long ago."
