The ODT reports the assault in a supermarket carpark late last year, was days after the man had been charged.
His lawyer says he's embarrassed he took matters in his own hands - hitting the man in the face with teh trolley, then walking away.
Judge Russell Walker told the man he can understand he was feeling emotional, but it's not a reason to lose control.
He sentenced the man to 60 hours' community work for threatening speech, and assault.
