Westpac is predicting house prices will rise by up to seven per cent next year

The latest data from the Real Estate Institute shows prices are picking up after a sluggish period.

Westpac says the cancellation of a capital gains tax, combined with tumbling mortgage rates, will push prices higher.

The bank predicts rises will be most pronounced in Christchurch and Auckland, where markets have been weakest.
