A scything spell from Will O'Rourke at the Tim Southee End has seen him return figures of three for 33 from eight overs.
He removed Jacob Bethell for 12 thanks to some Glenn Phillips acrobatics at backward point, and cramped Joe Root into feeding a catch to Will Young at gully for 32.
The key prize was getting Harry Brook, the man-of-the-match from Wellington, to chop on first ball.
England are 120 for five in reply to New Zealand's 347.
