Jay Leno only sleeps around four hours a night

The 74-year-old comedian has never been a "big sleeper", with Jay explaining that not having a "real job" has actually helped him to cope with a lack of sleep

Speaking about his role in the new movie 'Midas Man', Jay told PEOPLE: "I've always been that way - I've never a big sleeper.

"I thought, 'Well, I just gotta change my way, so say I go to bed at 2:00 or 2:30, I'll go to bed at 11:30,' and then I was up at 3:00.

"Now I'm reading for three and a half hours before I have to do anything. That's not working. So I just went back to my old way of going to bed at 2 or 2:30 and then waking up at 7:30 or 8:00."

Jay feels fortunate that he's never really had to follow a traditional work schedule.

The comedy star - who hosted 'The Tonight Show' between 1992 and 2009 - explained: "I'm just not a big sleeper.

"I suppose if I had a real job where I had to work hard, I'd be more exhausted. So that's probably what it is."

By contrast, Jay previously claimed that he worked twice as hard as his comedy rivals.

The TV star was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child, and having the learning difficulty has actually shaped his approach to life.

Jay told CNBC in 2016: "My mother always said to me, since I was dyslexic, 'You're going to have to work twice as hard as the other kids to get the same thing.' I said, 'OK. That seems fair.' And I did work twice as hard to get the same thing.

"I remember going to the comedy clubs and people would line up at 6.00pm for auditions to get a spot at midnight. By 9:00pm guys would go, 'I'm not waiting in line.' They would leave and then I would move on up."
