Earthquake risks have forced a sudden upheaval at Nelson's courthouse, which is now closed until at least June

Earthquake risks have forced a sudden upheaval at Nelson's courthouse, which is now closed until at least June

Recent seismic assessments revealed it only meets 15-percent of the New Building Standard strength code.

The connection between the original courthouse and the extension - created during a 10-million dollar rebuild 15 years ago - is now a safety concern.

Open Justice reports court staff were informed at an emergency meeting that the entire complex will be vacated from this week.

Ministry of Justice Chief Operating Officer Carl Crafar says some court events will continue virtually while others may need to be rescheduled.
