Canterbury is no longer under any Red or Orange wind warnings, but almost 200 people remain without electricity near Timaru.
Heavy rain continues to fall for the West Coast and parts of Marlborough, with up to 120 millimetres forecast.
MetService Meteorologist John Law says it will be windy around Wellington and Wairarapa tonight, but not at the strength Canterbury experienced.
He says there's currently an Orange wind warning, with 120-kilometre-an-hour gusts expected until the early morning.
