Auckland's Wesley College, in Pukekohe, has been under scrutiny for more than two years - after allegations of violence and assaults among boarders.
It stated last month the hostels would close in December.
The Ministry of Education has now moved to suspend Wesley's licence to house boarders - from this Friday.
It says there's been more violence this year and it's concerned about boarders' safety and wellbeing.
