McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris face disqualification from the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, after both cars allegedly breached F1's technical regulations.
Norris finished second, and Piastri fourth, in Sunday's (AEDT) grand prix, which was won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
But in a stunning post-race moment, both McLaren drivers were summoned to the stewards after F1's technical delegate, Jo Bauer, declared the thickness of the rear skid blocks on both cars was less than the minimum requirement of 9mm.
The skid blocks are part of the plank, which is attached to the floor of an F1 car, and regulates the height of the car off the ground.
The skid block is designed to prevent damage to the plank when the floor of the car brushes the ground.
The thickness of the skid blocks will lessen during a race as it makes contact with the ground, but it must not be less than 9mm thick.
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were disqualified from the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix for the same reason.
Hamilton was also disqualified from this year's Chinese Grand Prix for the same reason.
If the McLaren drivers are disqualified, it will blow the race for the F1 drivers' championship wide open.
Norris is on 408 points, 30 more than Oscar Piastri and 42 ahead of Verstappen with two rounds remaining.
But if both McLaren drivers are disqualified, that equation changes dramatically.
Norris will drop back to 390 points, the same amount he had when he entered the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend.
His lead in the championship will be 24 points to both Piastri and Verstappen, who will be level on 366 points.
Piastri will still be second in the championship, because he has won seven grands prix this year, compared with Verstappen's six.
