More than 150 people have gathered at Mount Maunganui's Blake Park, braving a cool wind for a vigil for those lost in the landslide

Organiser of the community-led sunset gathering, Rachel Bailie, says she believes it is important locals gather to support the families affected.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Tauranga Mayor Mahe Drysdale are among those at the vigil.
