The European Society of Cardiology suggests specialist teams should be established in all referral hospitals, to manage these risks for women at all stages of pregnancy.
Heart disease advocates - Kia Manawanui Trust - says while major hospitals have these teams, a national pathway to specialist care is needed.
Medical Director Dr Sarah Fairley says women are currently at the mercy of their living situation.
She says access to medical care can be tough for those with families, or jobs.
