There's a big increase in the number of female crews competing at this year's Surf Rescue Championships

There's a big increase in the number of female crews competing at this year's Surf Rescue Championships

The 2022 competition is at Mahia in Hawke's Bay this weekend - with 29 clubs, 104 crews and 325 competitors going head-to-head.

The number of women Inflatable Rescue Boat crews have jumped a third from last year - with 45 registered to compete.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand says it's likely due to the Wahine on Water IRB programme, which aims to get more women surf lifeguards training and driving IRBs.
