A number of organisations are said to be struggling with the costs of earthquake strengthening

A number of organisations are said to be struggling with the costs of earthquake strengthening

The Ministry of Education is the latest Wellington office to vacate after it was assessed as unsafe in an earthquake.

Wellington City Council Environment and Planning Committee chair Iona Pannett says the legislation needs to be re-examined to find out where are the real risks to public safety.

She says it's hard for some workplaces to foot the bill.

Pannett says in 2019 the average cost to strengthen an apartment was 400-thousand dollars.

She says the Government can take some of the burden because it has deep pockets, but we need to be careful with other sectors because the costs are so huge.
