The Hurricanes flanker - and former England international - is now eligible again to wear the black jersey, after the mandatory stand-down period.
Last year the 33 year old expressed to Rugby Pass his "desire to play at the next level".
However, as he kits up for the Wellington Lions in the first round of the new NPC season tonight, Shields says trying to break into the New Zealand camp is not his immediate focus.
The Lions meet Auckland at Eden Park tonight at 7.35pm... after defending champions Taranaki host Counties Manukau from 5.35pm.
