Air New Zealand flights could soon be partly powered by wood

Air New Zealand flights could soon be partly powered by wood

    Air New Zealand

A study commissioned by the carrier found it's possible to create jet fuel out of forestry industry waste like sawdust, slash and offcuts.

Through chemical processes, the waste is turned into ethanol and then kerosene.

Air New Zealand Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, Kiri Hannifin says it could lead to major cost and emission reductions.

She says it could power a quarter of a New Zealand's domestic jet fuel needs.
