Two-time NRL premiership winner Joey Manu has scored a try but been denied a winning start on professional rugby union debut

The former Kiwis star started at second five-eighth for Toyota Verblitz in their dramatic 30 to 27 defeat to Kubota Spears in round one of the new Japanese Top League season.

Former Wallabies first-five Bernard Foley kicked an injury time drop goal to hand Verblitz coach Sir Steve Hansen and new assistant Ian Foster a first-up loss.

All Black duo Richie Mo'unga and Shannon Frizell stepped up after halftime to help Toshiba Brave Lupus to a 28-21 win over the Yokohama Eagles.
