Coastal areas near the epicentre of a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the country's South, are expected to experience unpredictable surges

Coastal areas near the epicentre of a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the country's South, are expected to experience unpredictable surges

Geonet reports almost five thousand people felt the shake at 2.43pm - centred west of Stewart Island, 12 kilometres deep.

The National Emergency Management Agency says no land threat is expected.

Deputy Chief Executive John Price says there's marine danger between Milford Sound to Puysegur Point.

He says people in the area should stay away form the beach - and those near the water, should take precautions.
