Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have spoken for almost three hours at a face-to-face meeting in Alaska, but failed to reach the ceasefire deal the US president had been hoping for.
The US president and his Russian counterpart both said they had made progress during the highly anticipated meeting in Anchorage, but offered few specifics.
"There were many, many points that we agreed on," Mr Trump said.
"Most of them, I would say a couple of big ones, that we haven't quite got there but we've made some headway.
"So, there's no deal until there's a deal'
Mr Putin described the talks as "constructive", and thanked Mr Trump for the "wellwishing and trustworthy tone of our conversation", according to a translation of his remarks.
"I expect that today's agreement will be the starting point not only for the solution of the Ukrainian issue, but also will help us bring back businesslike and pragmatic relations between Russia and the US."
Neither Mr Trump nor Mr Putin took questions at the post-meeting press conference, and there was no mention of the "land swaps" that had been flagged by the US president in the days earlier.
Mr Putin suggested a future meeting could be held in Moscow, to which Mr Trump replied: "Oh, that's an interesting one. I'll get a little heat on that one, but I could see it possibly happening."
Mr Trump had earlier suggested Alaska could be the site of a second round of discussions.
Before the talks, Mr Putin was given a red-carpet welcome at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, and a ride in the presidential limousine — known as The Beast — with Mr Trump.
On his way to Alaska, Mr Trump said he would not be happy if a ceasefire deal was not reached during the talks. "I don't know if it's going to be today, but I'm not going to be happy if it's not today," he said.
He had also repeatedly warned Russia would face "severe consequences" if it continued the war.
But a day before the meeting, he said he was just hoping to "set the table" for a second meeting, possibly including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders.
After Friday's meeting, Mr Trump said he would call Mr Zelenskyy and NATO leaders to discuss it.
The meeting was initially planned to be a one-on-one between the presidents.
But a late change meant Mr Trump was accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff. Mr Putin was joined by his foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, and aide, Yury Ushakov.
