8,000 Powerco customers on the Coromandel Peninsular have no electricity tonight

The lines company has been grappling with damage done by powerful winds over the weekend.

Head of Network Operations Mark Dunn says says there are extensive repairs to make, with multiple poles and lines down in a number of places.

Mr Dunn says maintenance crews have been working as quickly and safely as they can, but many people won't have electricity overnight.
