The first week of the sex abuse trial against British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell has wrapped up in Manhattan

The first week of the sex abuse trial against British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell has wrapped up in Manhattan

Maxwell, who was a close companion of disgraced financier Jeffery Epstein, stands accused of sex trafficking alongside other child sex offences.

Week one of proceedings saw testimony from former Epstein employees and one accuser who claimed Maxwell coaxed her into indecent acts when she was underage.

However the defence attacked her account, saying it was unreliable and melodramatic, and questioned why it had taken her so long to come forward.

The trial is expected to last five more weeks.

Three other alleged victims are set to testify and flight logs from Epstein's private planes will be introduced.
