More than 600 earthquakes have been recorded since the 'earthquake swarm' in Kawerau began on Saturday

More than 600 earthquakes have been recorded since the 'earthquake swarm' in Kawerau began on Saturday

Geonet says the largest has been magnitude 4.8 -- but the majority have been between two and 2.9.

The agency's assuring 'earthquake swarms' are common in New Zealand -- and the ones in Kawerau are in keeping with historic activity in the region.

There were also swarms in 2018 and 2019.
