The first race of Supercars' return to New Zealand is about to hit the start line at the Taupo 400

The first race of Supercars' return to New Zealand is about to hit the start line at the Taupo 400

Cam Waters is on pole from fellow Aussie Will Brown, after mastering the wet and wild conditions in Waikato... with Kiwi Andre Heimgartner the best of the New Zealanders in third.

The season's seventh race will see a big change to fuel rules, for the first time in 12 years.

Because the Ford and General Motors engines output the same power and torque and consume fuel at the same rate, Supercars officials have ditched the regulation that equalise fuel consumption rates.

Motorsport commentator Mark Larkham says getting rid of the 80-litre minimum fuel drop for Taupo makes perfect sense.

The 24-strong grid will still have two compulsory pit-stops for both 200 kilometre races in Taupo.
