Spring has sprung, with wild weather smashing the South Island today

MetService has issued a warning with a heavy rain coming for the Southern Alps, potentially flooding Otago lakes and rivers.

An orange strong wind warning is in place across the Canterbury and North Otago with northwest gales.

Meteorologist Rob Kerr says he's expecting to see more weather like this as the west and northwesterly winds pick up.
