The mastermind behind Wayne Rooney's surprise video message to a North Canterbury football club is hopeful he can get another big name to get behind their push for Southern League promotion

The mastermind behind Wayne Rooney's surprise video message to a North Canterbury football club is hopeful he can get another big name to get behind their push for Southern League promotion

Waimak United's players were left in disbelief following the former England international's words of encouragement, leading into their 4-1 win over Burwood.

The club's director of football - Harry Trethowan - made it happen after becoming friends several years ago with Plymouth Argyle owner Simon Hallett... Rooney's now the head coach of the English Championship club.

Trethowan says he's got something else in the pipeline.

Waimak United have a home-and-away two leg semi final against FC Nelson starting next week - the winner will face Wanaka for a spot in the Southern League.
