Adele's former rented mansion has been rendered "unsellable" after the singer claimed in a 2012 interview it was haunted

Nicholas Sutton, owner of the West Sussex property known as Lock House, said the 36-year-old's remarks had "negatively impacted future marketing efforts and continues to affect the property's reputation to this day", according to planning documents obtained by The Times

Adele rented the 10-bedroom estate for six months in 2012.

During a CBS interview with Anderson Cooper that year, the 'Easy on Me' singer described the home as "all quite scary, really".

The New York Daily News reported Adele also said she had hired a female bodyguard after hearing unexplained noises at the home.

Mr Sutton has now claimed its association with paranormal activity has deterred buyers.

He said: "I have actively tried to sell the property for about 14 years."

Mr Sutton added a 2020 offer to buy the property was withdrawn after the potential purchaser learned about the mansion's supposed haunted status, which he said was "publicly mentioned by Adele during her tenancy."

The property, currently listed for £5,995,000 (about $7.4million), features seven en suite bedrooms, an indoor swimming pool, a guest cottage, and a tennis court.

Mr Sutton has applied to Horsham district council to convert the mansion into apartments, citing a "lack of demand for the property in its current form".

He said: "The proposal will preserve the historical significance of the home," which was built around 1909 and later used as a convent.

The BBC has reported the property was divided into 26 lots in 1971 before being acquired by a church.

Mr Sutton, who bought the estate in 2003, previously applied to convert it into five apartments, but permission was denied.

Adele's remarks are among several celebrity accounts of haunted homes, with others from famous faces including Joan Rivers and Nicolas Cage.
