Witnesses have described the panic - after a horror high-speed crash in Auckland overnight

The driver of a speeding car died around 1.30am after losing control on Dominion Road in Mount Roskill.

A trail of debris spanned the crash scene after the car hit power poles, a traffic light, trees and a fence.

Local man Ganesh Goundar was woken up by the noise and went to investigate with his flatmate.

He says they were shaken and worried about how many people were in the car and what happened to the driver.

Police say the driver was the only one in the car.
