Researchers are a step closer to ending debate on whether moa were native to Stewart Island

Researchers are a step closer to ending debate on whether moa were native to Stewart Island

The New Zealand Journal of Ecology has outlined analysis of a 700-year-old moa skeleton discovered on West Ruggedy Beach.

Study co-author Doctor Nic Rawlence says it's significant, because very few have been found in the area.

He says the findings could mean that when Polynesians arrived - moa were living on the island.
