It could soon become harder for Maori to prove customary claims to coastlines

It could soon become harder for Maori to prove customary claims to coastlines

Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith has confirmed plans, to require those seeking Customary Marine Title to prove they have had continuous exclusive use and ownership of the area since 1840.

It follows a Court of Appeal judgement last year, finding groups only needed to show they had enough control over the area to stop others from using it.

Te Pati Maori says it's a repeat of the foreshore and seabed debate from two decades ago, but Goldsmith says the law change will simply restore the law to what it previously was.

The change is part of National's coalition agreement with New Zealand First.
